SEATTLE KIDS MARATHON ... A SUCCESS!We had a huge turn out for the Seattle Kids Marathon. So many QAE runners that have been working hard to be ready for this came out and ran together! The city streets were blocked off for over 2000 runners that set out around the Space Needle and back to the finish line through the tunnel of Memorial Stadium with wild fans Cheering from the sides all along the way! It was a sight to see and even more fun to take part in. Running club is still taking place so you can continue to earn your laps during Recess as well as during PE time. |

Basics of Bicycling Program
Is provided by the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation, free of charge. Because this is a hands-on unit, bicycling skills and safety courses are designed to give young students skills and knowledge in traffic-wise bicycling. Courses have been designed on the blacktop playground. For those not riding a bike yet, our volunteers will also help us run the Learn to Ride Program on the same days.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED:
THE BASICS OF BICYCLING, Bike Safety Unit
WHO: Any adult volunteer
WHAT: Assist your child‟s PE teacher to run the bicycle safety unit
WHEN: (June 5-14) during your child‟s PE time (see schedule on the back)
WHY: With that many kids on bikes, I sure could use some help.
The Basics of Bicycling curriculum is new unit and is generously sponsored by the Cascade
Bicycle Club. This unit included 30 bikes and helmets, plus a basic curriculum to teach kids to, bike
safe, and bike smart. Students are encouraged and allowed to bring their own helmets. Students
may also bring/ride their own bikes as long as they are willing to share it with other students during the day.
Be sure bikes are in good working order. Students who bring their own bikes are responsible for their own bikes.
Weather permitting; the lessons will take place outside on the school grounds. If rainy or stormy
the bike unit will take place in the gym.
This program runs most successfully with a minimum of 2 volunteers per day class; 1 to help kids
who are learning how to ride („learners‟) and 1 to assist teacher with running the bike safety
stations. More is always better and I will most likely need more volunteers from 12:45-3:30 for our younger grades.
If you‟re interested, please email me and let me know your availability for days and session times below.
Dates June 5 -14 (2 sessions each day) Volunteer for one or both
Morning Session 9am-12:10 (Subject to fair weather)
Afternoon Session 12:45 -3:30 jlrothenberg@seattleschools.org
QAE RUNNING CLUB
Help our kids get Fit, have Fun
and Prepare for the Seattle Kids Marathon!
How the running program works:
At School: Kids have a chance to run laps around the playground at AM recess, lunch recess and weekends. Parent or staff volunteers count laps by handing out Popsicle sticks for every lap completed. Then, progress is tracked on a chart in the school. The kids love to find their name on the chart and see how many laps they have run. They can also earn “feet” (little plastic ones with a variety of colors and patterns) for every 5 miles they run. These are coveted items for all grade levels as they show them off on little shoelace necklaces. Our track is seven laps to the mile at school.
Weekends: Thanks to many dedicated parent volunteers our kids have an opportunity to run on Sundays on our QAE playground. You may show up anytime between 9AM and noon on Sunday’s through November 20th and have laps recorded for both the chart at school and qualifying for the Seattle Kids Marathon. It’s pretty cool to see a big group of kids and parents running around the playground, talking and having fun.
At home and around town: If you are a runner and want to run with your child around the neighborhood, at a track or on the trails we will count those miles too. Simply get a good idea of the number of miles, using your car odometer or standard track mileage for instance, and send me an email or note. We will then add that onto the chart at school. I have been asked if miles on bikes count and I have to say no, just running/walking.
A Big Goal: The Seattle Kids Marathon is every year in November, the day before the adult Seattle Marathon. This year the Kids Marathon is on November 26th. Grade 3 through grade 5 students who want to enter the race on November 26th are expected to run the 25 miles between now & the marathon date. We expect kids in grades K through 2 to make their best effort and show serious commitment to finish the 25 miles in order to enter the Marathon. After running 25 (or many more) “honor” miles, kids from across Seattle meet at the Seattle Center on November 26 and run the last 1.2 miles together on the end of the adult marathon course and into the stadium finish line. They then get a bunch of swag and party time in the Center. Altogether an awesome experience for our kids. We have set up a team with the Seattle Marathon folks and will send that information later this week so you can talk with your child about making the commitment to run the 25 miles and enter the race. You may get all the information on this you want at their official website HERE.
Later on: After the marathon is done there are some 5K or longer runs/races around town that I'd love anyone who is interested to do as a part of the QAE Running Club or the Running Explorers or something else catchy. Nice Drymax shirts and running shorts would be nice to show off if we wanted to get real serious and very cool. The problem is that the cost of most runs around here is pretty high for kids and adults running with them. There is a series at Magnuson Park that is both fun and reasonably priced. We did one last year, this year I'd love to do more of them. Their first is next weekend and I'll be a Carkeek all day. The second is the day after the Kids Marathon and the third is on December 17th. I'll point to December as our first opportunity together. For more information and planning their website is HERE.
Many kids who aren't going to do the marathon still love to run laps and it is a great way to burn off energy before coming back to class and a great way to get kids thinking about running as fun. There is no expectation to enter the marathon other than it‘s a blast to do it.
