Chess Club led by Chess Mates
Did you know that chess makes kids smart? National studies reveal that children who participate in long-term, structured chess activities increase their overall academic performance, especially in reading, math and science.
QAE welcomes Chess Mates Foundation to lead our students in a weekly, after-school program. Chess Mates is a local, nonprofit organization that focuses on chess as a teaching tool with intellectual and emotional benefits. Chess Mates provides each of its 30+ participating schools with a Chess Club Coach, teaching materials and administrative support needed to initiate, operate and maintain their chess clubs. In addition to regular weekly classes Chess Mates also sponsors three major scholastic tournaments each year—the first of which is in November!
· Tuesdays, 3:40-4:40pm
· October 4th through April 24th
· Cost: $90 for whole year +student to provide chess set; Half-year registration (start Jan 17th) is $55
· Grades K-5
· Class K-1 is currently full, Class 2-5 has openings; Register by filling out a registration form and returning to school office with payment by January 12th
In order for the program to be successful at our school, PARENT VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!!! When you sign your child up, please consider volunteering your time to assist the coach and supervise kids during club meetings, or make yourself available for tournament and other after-club duties. Chess Mates cost is low in part because they rely on parents to be present at each club meeting to assist the coach with classroom management, locate missing children, and provide feedback to the organization.
For questions, contact interim Chess Club Coordinators Nan Noble at nannoble@gmail.com or Elizabeth Kruse at emdowell@comast.net. (Note: We are looking for a couple of interested parents to take over coordination of the chess club).
