Hello to QAE families!
There have been reports in the Seattle community of Fifth’s Disease, a mild childhood illness that is often called “Slapped Cheeks illness.”   The following information may help answer some questions:

- Fifth’s Disease is usually identified by the bright red cheeks that appear once children are no longer contagious.
- It is a virus that often appears in the springtime and children typically get symptoms  similar to a cold with a “lacy rash”.
- It is spread through infected respiratory secretions by coughing or sneezing, and by hand-to-hand contact, the same as catching a viral cold.
- Sometimes children have body aches or a headache with a slight rise in temperature, but they may also be symptom free.
- This is the time when the child is contagious and can spread the virus to others.
- Days later the bright red rash appears on the cheeks and looks as if they have been sunburned or slapped on the face.
- You may also see a rash on other parts of their body that may be a bit itchy.
- Children are no longer contagious once the rash appears so they should come to school if they feel well.
- The rash may come and go over a period of weeks, and show up more in warm weather or when your child is very active.

Adults who get Fifth’s disease don’t get the facial rash, but can develop joint pain & swelling and a fine rash on their trunk, arms and legs. Pregnant women who are exposed to someone with Fifth’s Disease should inform their health provider.  It is rare, but possible, that a pregnant woman who gets Fifth’s disease can have serious complications with her pregnancy if she gets sick with the virus. People who have a compromised immune system from other serious illness or receiving medical chemotherapy, should also seek medical care if they are exposed to Fifth’s Disease.

Luckily many adults will not get Fifth’s Disease because they are immune from having been exposed to it earlier in life.  If you are at risk for complications, your health provider can determine if you are immune.

I hope this is helpful in the event you hear about Fifth’s Disease at QAE.  So far, I do not know of any cases, but this is the season.

In good health,
Eileen

As we wrap up QAE's third year of existence, the PTSA would like to thank all of the staff, administrators and parents who have helped make this year our best year yet!

It almost goes without saying -- but I'll say it anyway.  This school is a better place because of the involvement of our parents, and that means each and every one of you who have offered your time and/or resources to the school -- by our extremely rough estimates, that's over 2,000 hours of helping hands.  But there's a particular group of people whom I'd like to thank today -- the 11 dedicated PTSA board members who are "retiring" after (in most cases) multiple years of service.  They are:

Brook Wessel, Co-Treasurer
Heather Anderson, Volunteer Coordinator
Holley Ring, Fundraising Co-Chair
John Ruljanich, Co-President
Jenice Lee, Enrichment Co-Chair
Kristin Teske, Social Activities and Community Development Chair
Lauren Gums, Social Emotional Learning Co-Chair
Liz McKay, Communications Co-Chair
Shelly Dillon, Secretary
Steve Tatge, Facilities Chair
Victoria Nunes, Enrichment Co-Chair

These folks have worked alongside the staff to build programs and events that benefit our entire community.  They have advocated for your children, and they have spent your dollar contributions wisely.  They're all busy people with full lives of their own, but they've made time to help shape what QAE is today.  Talk about a rewarding job!

I'm sure they would all appreciate a quick "thanks" if you happen to run into any of these fine folks.

Moving forward, we've filled nine of the open board slots for next year, but there are still some important, unfilled roles out there, as well as a host of other activities -- big and small -- that the PTSA could use your help with.  So please consider lending a hand.  It really is a wonderful way to connect with the school and make a difference in the education of your children. If you're interested in learning more, please look here for a list of openings and people to contact.

Finally, I would like to invite you to the final PTSA general membership meeting of the year, scheduled for next Thursday, June 6th from 6:30-8 pm in the school cafeteria.  We will be voting on our proposed 2013/14 budget and the recommended PTSA Executive Board members, and getting an update from David on plans for the next school year.  It should be a good one.

Have a wonderful last few weeks of school, and an even more wonderful summer with your kids! See you on the 6th ...
